We began our Conference in Mandalay. The city has over 1 million living in it, with about 10,000 who claim to be Christian. They have just finished a series of meetings with the Billy Graham Crusade, where an estimated 5,000 attended. It is believed that the majority were Buddhist. It has been a busy time for them, and they are very encouraged. Nevertheless 76 attended our first day looking at an OT overview and a study of Deuteronomy. Several aspects are encouraging. Firstly the number of attenders who are telling us the conferences over the years have been helpful in their ministries. Several mentioned their work at expository preaching. Secondly the attentive and interactive participation of those attending. We ran a workshop looking at Deut 1:9-33. Together those attending identified the major themes and NT connections.
A team of leaders from Shan State are attending this year to explore whether a future conference in Shan State would be possible. We are encouraged to see the enthusiasm expressed in our first day. We are also thankful that the PTI books and commentaries on Deuteronomy have arrived. Together we believe these will prove useful tools for these workers.
